The Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) was officially inaugurated into the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) on the 21st February 2012. This was during LARMAT’s Departmental Strategic Planning Workshop held at Morendat Training & Conference Center in Naivasha. The inauguration of the Centre in the Department was among the objectives of the workshop that was intended to align the Center’s mandate to that of LARMAT for synergy and complementarity.

The session was opened by Prof. Jesse Njoka, the Coordinator, Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies. He gave brief remarks explaining the Centre’s achievements, vision and objectives. The participants were then divided into groups to address the following areas:

  • Alignment of the Center within the UoN Structure for long term sustainability (IDRDU model)

Expectations from the Department of LARMAT and the University at large of the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies

  • Ownership and flexibility of the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (inputs, outputs and Impacts) - Keeping the Center a vibrant think tank addressing dryland policy and development issues.

At the end of the session, it was unanimously agreed that the Centre should be given a Legal status to be able to carry on with its Mandate. The participants called for ways of fast tracking the procurement process to minimize delays experienced in purchasing the Centre’s requirements.
