Frankline Otiende, intern attached to the CSDES Office

I quite enjoyed my internship at the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) office. Besides giving me work experience, it enriched my professional life. Since I was a boy I had always dreamt of authoring a book or being one of the contributors or editors of some work. At the Centre this was a dream I attained. The first newsletter of the Centre bore my name as an editor. As an intern at the Centre I was able to edit the magazine. I learnt how to title articles put captions of pictures and design the magazine. I always had a dream of being a lecturer at a university. In reality I have attained this dream upon completion of my masters degree. Currently I’m a tutorial fellow at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University in Siaya County. Another dreamed attained courtesy of CSDES.

The Research-for-Development program sponsored part of MSc. project work. My research project was to investigate the effects of military training on the distribution and abundance of wildlife on Mpala Ranch. The Centre accepted my proposal and funded me to investigate the socio-economic effects of military training on the inhabitants of Laikipia. This gave my project a human face. From this background, I now see myself attain my PhD.

At the Centre I had the privilege of coordinating field courses which brought me so close to students. I must say I loved it. The memories are cherished and treasured.
