In fulfilling its objective of creating a learning platform for knowledge exchange at the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS), the Centre for Sustainable Dryland Ecosystems and Societies (CSDES) held a successful seminar on 8th July 2013 that was dubbed plant community dynamics and livestock-wildlife interactions in semi-arid rangelands of Central Kenya and western North America. Prof. Kari Veblen, assistant professor, Dept. of Wildland Resources at Utah State was the guest speaker.

The seminar was held at the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) and it attracted more than 40 participants including; faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate students. Also present were Prof. R. Kinuthia, Chairman, LARMAT and Prof. J.T. Njoka, Director, CSDES.

Prof. Veblen gave an exciting presentation that highlighted the commonalities between rangelands in Kenya and North America.  She presented research from Acacia drepanolobium savanna in Laikipia, Kenya with special emphasis on plant-plant interactions and livestock-wildlife interactions and compared it with the North American shrublands ecosystems in the context of federal land management.
