The University of Nairobi, African Drylands Institute for Sustainability (ADIS) is one of the implementing partners for the USAID funded project Accelerated Value Chain Development-Livestock Component (AVCD-LC). The project is led by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI). Its overall purpose is to increase the income of 60,000 pastoral households through a 50% increase in the sale of livestock by 2018. The target area of operation is the 5 counties in the resilience Zone of Influence (ZOI) that is Marsabit, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo and Turkana. Under the project, ADIS is providing technical expertise on rangeland management and commercial pasture and fodder production.

Under the auspices of this project, trainings on pasture and fodder production and conservation were carried out in Nakuprat-Gotu and Kinna in Isiolo County. Members of the Nakuptrat-Gotu Conservancy were trained on 13-14th September, 2016, while in Kinna, the Malka Bisan Cultural Group members were trained on 15-16th. The training team comprised Dr. Stephen Mureithi and Peter Kamande, both of UoN, and the County representatives from the State Department of Livestock, Mr. Halkano Hache (in Gotu) and Mr. Sadat (in Kinna).

The community was trained on pasture production and reseeding, selection of desirable forage, and technologies for land preparation to enhance pasture establishment and productivity. ADIS will progressive build the community capacity through training post-pasture establishment technologies for weed control, conservation and value addition of fodder, bulking of seeds and hay, and livestock fattening among others.
