Dr. Koech Oscar, of the University of Nairobi, Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT), a pasture expert at the African Dryland Institute for Sustainability (ADIS) conducted a pasture training and outreach on commercialization of pasture production in Wajir County during the pasture week. The use of technology in production, conservation and utilization of feed is the way to go in ensuring sustainability of livestock production in ASAL counties in Kenya. Wajir County is one of the ASAL counties that face many challenges in feed for livestock, especially with the increasing frequencies of droughts. The county requires urgent measures for increased animal feed supply throughout the seasons. The need for sustainable rangeland management and production and conservation of feed resources to bridge the feed deficit seasons in Wajir County is imminent. Notably, there exists opportunity for the county in the establishment of fodder banks/strategic feed reserves to ensure adequate feed availability in all the seasons.

The overall goal of the pasture week activity in Wajir County was to create awareness and provide a learning platform where pasture experts, pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, traders, service providers and county government and development agencies could meet and share experiences, technologies, knowledge and skills that will enable increased pasture and fodder production and utilization for sustainable livestock production as a business.
