The University of Nairobi in partnership with World Vision Somalia and IGAD Sheikh Technical University of Veterinary School (ISTVS) under the collaborative research, extension and outreach program supported by World Vision through the DFAT funded Australian NGO cooperation Program (ANCP) project.
This has enhanced a youth capacity development for students at ISTVS in areas of natural resource management and sustainable agricultural systems. This partnership has allowed students to have practical training on extension and farmer outreach services through active engagement in the project activities. Two third year female students at ISTVS (Sahra Ibrahim and Amina Ali) were recently engaged in training and outreach on plant propagation, good agronomic practices, agroforestry, and apiculture and irrigated horticulture production. The interns reported this as the first opportunity that has enabled them learn and gain hands-on skills on extension methodologies for knowledge and technology transfer. The project has also attached graduate intern Mr. Mohamed Ahmed at ISTVs to work on Plant propagation and tissue culture technology to enhance local capacity for the country and institution. Dr. Koech Oscar, a lecturer and researcher at the University of Nairobi (UoN), Department of LARMAT, fully support this type of engagement to allow youth gain experience and skills in Natural resource management for better livelihoods in the horn of Africa.
